In the world of trading, "consistency is king." The Trader’s Triangle is a performance-tracking framework that evaluates three essential statistics:

- "Average Win Percentage" -  The average size of your winning trades.

- "Average Loss Percentage" - The average size of your losing trades.

- "Batting Average" - The percentage of trades you win compared to the total number of trades.

These metrics are critical because they are the building blocks of your "Expectancy."

WHAT IS YOUR EXPECTANCY?

Expectancy tells you how much, on average, you can expect to make per trade. If your expectancy is positive and consistently higher than the market's return, you’re on track to grow your equity curve steadily.

The benefit of this approach is that if you understand the  effectiveness of your strategy.  ie.  "If your WINS are larger then your losses", you can have a low batting average and still make money. The reverse is also true. If your batting average is high, but your losses are larger then your wins, you WILL lose money.

If you are not tracking your data, you are guessing to know if you can actually grow your equity curve. The Trader's Triangle, allows you to asses your performance in real time and give you the proper feedback loop to adjust.

The S&P 500 has delivered an average annualized return of approximately 10% to 11% over the past 100 years (as of 2024). This figure includes both price appreciation and reinvested dividends.

  • "Nominal Return" -  Around 10%-11% annually.
  • Inflation-Adjusted (Real) Return) - Around 6%-7% annually, after accounting for inflation.


These averages can vary depending on the exact time frame used and economic conditions, but they offer a benchmark for assessing the performance of individual trading strategies. For traders, achieving an expectancy that consistently outperforms this average should be a critical goal.

Without tracking these metrics, you’re essentially trading blind. You might think you’re profitable, but without data, there’s no way to confirm or refine your strategy.
