Zero-Dated Options (0DTE) have exploded in popularity recently, but their origins trace back to a quiet structural shift in the U.S. options market.
Originally, standard options only expired monthly—typically on the third Friday. In 2005, the CBOE (Chicago Board Options Exchange) introduced weekly options, giving traders more flexibility and more frequent expiration's. These weeklies caught on quickly with both retail and institutional players, who saw the opportunity to fine-tune exposure around earnings, news events, and macro data.
Fast-forward to 2022, the CBOE expanded weekly expirations even further on major indices like SPX, SPY, and QQQ, offering options that expired every single weekday. That set the stage for same-day trading—what we now call 0DTE.
By 2023–2024, 0DTE options had morphed into a daily battleground, with day traders, institutions, and market makers battling it out in real time. What started as a tool for flexibility evolved into a high-octane instrument for speculation, hedging, and volatility manipulation.
Today,0DTEs account for over 50% of SPX options volume, fundamentally altering market behavior—and giving retail traders a seat at the table they never had before.
