Welcome to the last week of Q3—a.k.a. the fiscal cliffhanger edition of Wall Street theater.
Futures are green out the gate, riding M&A Monday headlines as the Saudis swoop in with a $55B deal to take Electronic Arts private.
Government shutdown roulette is back on the board with Trump and Democrats meeting at 3PM. Expect fireworks, fearmongering, and a flood of headlines into the close as the threat of layoffs looms if the Hill can’t ink a deal.
Layer on Walmart’s CEO dropping ominous notes about AI’s impact on jobs, Fed heads reminding us the “dual mandate” is a balancing act that feels like juggling chainsaws, and OPEC hinting at ramped-up oil production next week—and you’ve got a cocktail of catalysts to close out September.
Hurry up and wait may be the play until we get clarity, because last week’s losing streak showed us the market still has teeth.
PreMarket Movers
Electronic Arts (EA) — Popped 5% after Jared Kushner’s Saudi-backed consortium confirmed a $55B deal to take the gaming giant private. The “video game over” headline is real.
Cannabis stocks — MSOS ETF ripped +22% after Trump’s Truth Social post touting cannabinoids for seniors. Aurora Cannabis +14%. When policy meets politics, the tape smokes.
Novo Nordisk — Down 3.2% after Morgan Stanley cut to underweight. Competition in GLP-1 land is heating up.
Lam Research — +3% on Deutsche Bank upgrade. Wafer fab outlook improving, valuation closer to peers. Chips still printing.
Oracle — +1% bounce after last week’s -8.2% faceplant. Still digesting AI hype volatility.
AppLovin — +2.7% as MS hikes PT to $750. October 1st launch of its non-gaming ad platform = major catalyst.
Boeing — +1% following Friday’s +3.6%. FAA easing restrictions on 737 Max certs = some tailwind.
Intel — -1.7% after monster rally leaves it overbought (RSI 80). Vulnerable to a pullback.
Applied Materials — +1% after securing $2B revolving credit facility with BofA.
Wells Fargo — Slightly red after MS downgrade to equal weight. Limited upside flagged.
Strengths: M&A headlines and sector rotation (chips, defense, energy) keep liquidity flowing. Market breadth improving as Boeing, Lam, and AppLovin show life beyond Mag 7.
Weaknesses: Shutdown risk remains a major overhang. Fed messaging still hawkish-lite, weighing on risk appetite. Novo Nordisk downgrade reminds us not all growth sectors are bulletproof.
Opportunities: Cannabis sector momentum shows how policy/politics can trigger outsized upside in beaten-down corners. AppLovin’s October catalyst and Lam’s upgrade show specific stock setups matter more than broad narratives.
Threats: OPEC’s plan to increase oil supply could cool crude prices but spike volatility. “Movie tariffs” on the table may weigh on NFLX and studios, adding uncertainty to consumer discretionary. Shutdown chaos could bleed into October, triggering more volatility.
In the last 10 trading days of September, the S&P 500 has produced negative returns about 60% of the time, with an average drop of around –1.1 %. In a post-election presidential year — especially a year that begins a new term — the chances of that period being positive drop further (only ~29 % of the time).
It’s the last week of the quarter. Most traders will press, chase, and force it—trying to “make back” September’s chop. That’s a rookie move. Professionals know: the power of patience compounds more than panic. Providence favors the prepared, not the panicked.
