Meanwhile, the AI bubble whispers are growing louder. Remember: when CNBC and Reddit start chanting “bubble” in unison, you’re closer to profit-taking than parabolic growth. Expect some trimming as we head into the weekend while Fed cuts move from “done deal” to “not guaranteed.”

Strengths: Momentum is still intact at all-time highs. AI capex and tech expansion continue to attract capital. Rotation into commodities and utilities shows diversification beneath the surface. Strong corporate M&A and infrastructure spending give markets long-term fuel.

Weaknesses: The government shutdown risks dragging on, delaying critical economic data and muddying Fed policy signals. Earnings season approaches with heightened expectations baked into valuations. Export restrictions highlight fragility in the global chip supply chain. And now, Apple—one of the Mag 7 titans—has been slapped with a downgrade and 20% downside call.

Opportunities: Sector rotation into overlooked plays—copper (FCX), drones (RCAT), utilities (ETR)—offers tactical setups beyond the crowded AI names. Oversold tech and real estate stocks like Zillow may present snapback trades. Traders who can identify catalysts in “second-tier” sectors could catch the next wave of momentum.

Threats: Fed cut expectations are being repriced lower—profit-taking could accelerate if “higher-for-longer” creeps back into the narrative. Meme stock fatigue plus dilution risks (GME, UEC) could sour retail sentiment. Talk of an “AI bubble” can quickly become a self-fulfilling prophecy if institutions rotate out too aggressively. And if Apple truly cracks, the market’s fragile concentration risk becomes an open wound.

On October 1, 2007, the S&P 500 opened the fourth quarter just 2% shy of its all-time high—only to peak days later before the financial crisis unraveled. Translation: October 1st often looks deceptively strong… but history whispers caution.
