PAYDAY FRIDAY EDITION THE MARKET WHISPERER STRIKES AGAIN
It’s Day 17 of the Government Shutdown, and apparently, the only thing still running is Trump’s mouth—and the market’s reaction to it. The former president turned stock whisperer has been orchestrating price swings all week with offhand comments about China talks, obesity drug prices, and the cockroach colony hiding inside regional banks.
The week’s soundtrack?
A remix of The Apprentice meets The Big Short. Private credit is sweating, commercial real estate is cracking, and traders are wondering: is that 2008 I hear breathing again?
But like clockwork, the Buy-the-Dip Brigade did their thing overnight—turning Thursday’s “credit crunch scare” into today’s “comeback rally.” Futures are green-ish, volatility’s easing off its panic spike, and Moody’s stepped in with the classic “Don’t worry, everything’s fine” speech.
Sure, Moody’s. We’ve heard that one before.

The market’s like a poker table. Everyone’s watching Trump’s face, not their own cards. The problem? He’s bluffing with the entire deck
Pre-market Pulse:
Dow futures up 70 points (+0.1%) after Thursday’s 300-point flush. S&P 500 flat. Nasdaq 100 -0.2%.
Despite the chaos, all three indices are up for the week—S&P +1.2%, Dow +1%, Nasdaq +1.6%.
The key level today? NVDA at the 50-day moving average.
If it breaks below, the AI trade loses its crown. If it holds, the “AI ain’t over” narrative gets another life.
Regional Banks – Trying to crawl out of the cockroach cave. Zions +1% after a Baird upgrade, Western Alliance +0.8%, KRE ETF +0.4%. Still twitchy. Jefferies – +3% after Oppenheimer upgrade. Yesterday’s 10% sell-off? Overreaction. CSX – +2.5% after beating on both top and bottom lines. Railroads rolling. Interactive Brokers – -2.6% despite a beat. Apparently traders didn’t love “better-than-expected.” Oracle – -2.4%, giving back its Meta rally. Profit-taking or just boredom? Bank OZK – -2% on earnings miss. Regional banks can’t catch a break. Novo Nordisk & Eli Lilly – -4% each after Trump said obesity drug prices could be “much lower.” The market heard: “margin massacre.” Fifth Third & Comerica – +2.8% and +0.8% on strong earnings. The merger actually working? Imagine that. Micron – -1.8% after exiting China’s server chip market. Geopolitics > profits. Huntington Bancshares – +2% on earnings beat. Cockroach or comeback? Time will tell. American Express – +1% after beating and raising guidance. The rich still swipe. Truist Financial – +2.8% on earnings beat. Maybe the regionals aren’t all doomed. Intuitive Machines – +4.8% on Deutsche Bank upgrade. The space race is back on—literally.
Strengths:
Earnings season off to a surprisingly strong start. Consumers are still spending, travel and credit card data remain healthy, and volatility spikes are being sold—classic bullish behavior.
Weaknesses:
Private credit cracks and regional bank contagion fears are not small issues. The VIX flirting with 27 shows institutional nerves. NVDA’s 50MA test could dictate next week’s tone.
Opportunities:
Sector rotation into value and industrials is giving life to laggards. For tactical traders, the controlled pullbacks are buy zones—especially when internals reset.
Threats:
Shutdown paralysis continues, no fresh econ data, and inflation expectations creeping back up. If the AI leaders break their technical support, the entire momentum trade could unravel fast.
Retail traders poured $1.4 billion into U.S. equities during Thursday’s selloff—the fifth-largest single-day retail buy since 2008.
Translation?
The “dumb money” is starting to act smart… or reckless. The next few sessions will decide which.
